Motivation: A short review on concept of motivation in Pharmaceutical Industry

Definition: 

According to William G. Scott, motivation is a process of stimulating an individual to act, to accomplish desired goal.
According to Mcfarland, Motivation refers to urges, drives, desires, strive, needs, etc.

It is a type of process of compelling individuals to strive and struggle for attainment of company's goals. It is a type of emotion/ drive that operating upon ones' will and promoting him/her to act for the attainment of particular goal.

Motivation convert dormant energy to active/ motive form. Motivation transform Human behavior and efforts.

Characteristics of motivation:

  1. It is an internal feeling
  2. Person in total is involved, not in parts
  3. It is Goal Directed behavior.

Importance of motivation:

  • High performance levels can be achieved.
  • Low employee turnover and absentees.
  • Acceptance of organizational changes by employees.

Why do we need motivation?

To create an environment in which employees can work with full efficiency, Zeal, enthusiasm, interest, and initiative. They can sense the pride and confidence with high moral satisfaction (individually and within group). They can work with responsibilities, loyalty, and discipline.

Elements of motivation:

  1. Understanding: the needs, desires, urges, of people who will going under emotional stimulation i.e. Motivation
  2. Communication: with people for proper counselling and stimulation.

Factors that can motivate people:

  1. Money/ reward
  2. Good working environment
  3. Challenging job
  4. Personal accomplishments
  5. Opportunities to grow and develop.
  6. Praises for good work
  7. Communication system
  8. Need for satisfaction:
  • Social needs
  • Recognitional needs
  • Feeling of Participation.

Types of Motivation:

1. On the basis of individuality:

  • Self motivation: Self stimulation to do work. Willingness to work on your own. It is depends on one's natural inertia. And can be depleted due to tired feelings.
  • Group motivation: Willingness to work in a group. Based on Human social behavior. Related to flow ideas, plans, inventions and systems.

2. On the basis of Satisfaction:

  • Positive motivation: Increase motive satisfaction
  • Negative motivation: Decrease motive satisfaction.

3. On the basis of Finance:

  • Extrinsic motivation: concerned with Employees enjoyment. Related with Financial motivators, including Pay promotions, holidays packages, status fringe benefits, insurance scheme, retirement plans, etc. 
  • Intrinsic motivation: Non-financial motivation. Concerned with feeling of accomplished something worthwhile. That is Satisfaction of doing work properly, Praises, power, respect, responsibilities, recognition, etc.

How to motivate employees:

 

Rules to motivate:

  • Check the variability: Every person respond differently.
  • Self interest: If we satisfy the individuals' own interests which is linked to our organizations' goal.
  • Attainability: Establish those goals which are attainable
  • Participation of employee
  • Proportioning rewards according to efforts of individual
  • Human elements
  • Individual and group relations
  • Situational managerial functions
